BARSTOW • Crowds of tourists roam across the busy sidewalks of the Barstow Tanger Outlet Center every day — some coming from as far as China.
Being the “pit stop” between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, the Tanger Outlet Mall has helped Barstow flourish as travelers stop for a bite to eat, to grab souvenirs and for bathroom breaks.
With all the business that flows through, it’s not surprising to hear that the Tanger Outlet Mall is doing well. How well?
In a 2012 California Retail Survey, Barstow was ranked 12th with $1.3 million in retail sales per outlet.
Barstow was one of 23 local markets in the top 50 to average an excess of $1 million, while the normal statewide average was $503,417 based on data from 2010. The city leading the survey was Colma with $6 million in retails per sales outlet.
The Tanger Outlet Mall is home to 43 stores, some of which include: Aeropostale, Claire’s, Coach Factory, GUESS, GAP, Old Navy and Reebok. With such a large number of stores, people from all over the world passing through to Las Vegas tend to stop by and pick out an outfit or two.
“What I like about working at the outlet malls is the different cultures that come through on the VIP busses and who happen to be traveling through to Vegas,” said Rita Islas, floor supervisor at Van Heusen. “We get a mixture of cultures and it’s neat to be able to interact with them. We get to meet people from China, Australia, Africa, Thailand, Europe, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, India, Israel and all over the world.”
The Tanger Outlet Mall is also home to one of the 20 California Welcome Centers. These centers can help provide information for planning a trip as well as locations of the local hot spots.
The mall is at 2796 Tanger Way in Barstow, off Interstate 15 near Lenwood Road.
